About this scholarship
The Yenching Academy at Peking University offers the fully funded Yenching Fellowship for its interdisciplinary Master's in China Studies (2027 cohort, starting September 2027): tuition, accommodation, a monthly stipend, medical insurance, one round-trip travel allowance and field-study costs. International applications opened 1 September 2026 and close 30 November 2026 at 9:00 a.m. Beijing time (Partner University nominees: 7 December 2026 after internal pre-selection). Applicants need a bachelor's degree in any field by 31 August 2027 and meet the stated English minima.
Minimum requirements
Bachelor's degree in any field, awarded no later than 31 August 2027; English proficiency IELTS Academic 7.0, TOEFL iBT 100, Cambridge English Scale (Advanced) 185, CET 6 600, or TEM 4 pass at good level or above, with tests taken after 1 September 2025 (native English speakers and graduates of English-taught degrees are exempt, except applicants from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, who must still provide a test report); students or alumni of Yenching Partner Universities must first complete their home university's internal pre-selection process.
Application checklist
- Confirm you will hold a bachelor's degree in any field by 31 August 2027, and check whether you are a student or alumnus of a Yenching Partner University — if so, complete your home university's internal pre-selection first.
- Create an account on the Yenching Academy admissions portal and prepare the online form, a personal statement (750 words or less), a statement of research interest (maximum 1,500 words excluding citations), CV, official transcript(s), diploma(s) or certificate(s) of enrolment, and two academic letters of recommendation from full or associate professors (or equivalent) in your intended field.
- Arrange English test scores (IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 100, Cambridge Advanced 185, or the other accepted tests, taken after 1 September 2025) sent directly from the testing organisation to Yenching Academy (TOEFL institution code C488), unless you qualify for the native-speaker or English-taught-degree exemption — note Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan applicants must still provide a test report.
- Submit everything through the Yenching portal before 30 November 2026 at 9:00 a.m. Beijing time (or 7 December 2026 for Partner University nominees); Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan applicants must also complete the supplementary Peking University Graduate Admissions application and mail hard copies before 10 January 2027 — check the official page for that track.
Application tips
- The deadline is 9:00 a.m. Beijing time, not midnight — submit days early, since late applications are not accepted.
- Partner-university applicants who skip internal pre-selection risk rejection on procedure alone, even with a strong file; confirm your home university's internal deadline, which falls before Yenching's own deadline.
- Recommendation letters must come from full or associate professors (or equivalent) in your intended field — check this before asking referees, as other referees are not accepted.
- Do not use TOEFL MyBest, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, IELTS Indicator, IELTS Online or IELTS One Skill Retake: the official page states these are not accepted.
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
