About this scholarship
McGill University merit-based entrance scholarships for first-time undergraduate students, including one-year $3,000 awards by automatic consideration and Major Entrance Scholarships of $3,000, $5,000 or $10,000 per year for international students, renewable for 3–4 years on meeting renewal criteria.
Minimum requirements
First-time university students entering a full-time undergraduate degree programme, with outstanding academic achievement. Two centrally administered types: one-year scholarships valued at $3,000 (non-renewable, automatic consideration) and Major Entrance Scholarships valued between $12,000 and $48,000 in total ($3,000 to $12,000 per year, renewable for up to 4 years provided renewal criteria are met); the international major tiers are $3,000, $5,000 or $10,000 per year, with the $12,000 tier reserved for Canadian citizens and permanent residents. A separate application is required soon after submission of the admission application, available on the Undergraduate Admission Portal, and must be submitted by the entrance scholarship deadline. Transfer, mature, diploma, exchange, special, part-time and visiting students are not eligible. Certain faculties offer their own faculty-specific entrance scholarships.
Application checklist
- Apply for undergraduate admission to McGill by 15 January 2027 (international and U.S. applicants)
- Complete the separate major entrance scholarship application in the Undergraduate Admissions Applicant Portal soon after applying for admission (it opens 1 October)
- Submit the major entrance scholarship application by 21 January 2027
- Meet the renewal criteria to keep a renewable award (27 McGill graded credits per regular academic year and the sessional GPA standard, probationary 3.50 in the first year)
- Check the Undergraduate Scholarships and Awards Calendar for the complete list and faculty-specific awards
Application tips
- Do both steps: admission alone gives only the automatic one-year $3,000 consideration — the major renewable scholarship needs the separate portal application by 21 January 2027.
- Do not count on the $12,000 tier as an international student; the international major tiers are $3,000, $5,000 and $10,000 per year.
- The McCall MacBain Scholarship is a different McGill award and its 2027 international deadline (19 August 2026) has already closed — do not confuse the two.
- Transfer, mature, diploma, exchange, special, part-time and visiting students are not eligible for entrance scholarships.
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
