About this scholarship
DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program residencies for outstanding international artists: 12 months for literature and music & sound, 6 months for film, with a monthly living stipend, a furnished apartment, travel to and from Berlin and German lessons; about 18 residencies per year. Visual arts runs by nomination only and has no open application.
Minimum requirements
Outstanding international artists who have developed their own voice and standing; the programme is not designed for emerging artists still in school or just out of education (doctoral students are eligible). No academic background is required and there is no upper age limit. Open application in film, literature and music & sound only; visual arts candidates are nominated and selected by a specialist jury, so no application can be submitted in that field. German nationals are excluded (dual nationals living abroad only with at least six years' primary residency in the application country). Artists residing primarily in Germany are excluded, except those first registered in Germany no more than fifteen months before the deadline. Alumni cannot reapply. About 18 residencies per year.

- No letters of recommendation are accepted
Application tips
- Apply in film, literature or music & sound only — visual arts has no open application and runs by nomination and specialist jury.
- Check the Germany-residence exclusion before applying: artists residing primarily in Germany are excluded unless first registered there no more than fifteen months before the deadline.
- German nationals are excluded, including dual nationals unless they have resided primarily in the application country for at least six years.
- For 2028 the single collective fellowship (up to 3 people) is awarded in music & sound only; all other categories offer individual fellowships.
