About this scholarship
Merit-based service-obligation scholarship from the Kansas Board of Regents for Kansas residents pursuing teacher licensure (bachelor's) or licensed teachers pursuing a new endorsement or a master's in a hard-to-fill discipline, or planning to teach in an underserved Kansas area; recipients teach one year for each year of support, for up to ten semesters.
Minimum requirements
Kansas resident attending a Kansas higher education institution; enrolled in a programme leading to licensure as a teacher in an identified hard-to-fill discipline (2026–27: Elementary Education, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Special Education) or planning to teach in an underserved geographic area (USD 501 Topeka, USD 500 Kansas City KS, USD 259 Wichita, Kansas State Board of Education Districts 5, 7, 9); or a currently licensed teacher enrolled in a programme leading to a new endorsement or a master's in one of those disciplines or areas. Not for Administration, Counseling or Library/Media Science degrees. Minimum 3 credit hours per semester. Merit-based; priority to junior and senior students. Recipients sign a service agreement to teach one year for each year of funding; failure to fulfil the obligation requires repayment plus 5% interest.
Application checklist
- Online application at sfa.kansasregents.gov
- FAFSA filed (required for most KBOR aid)
- Official college transcripts from all schools attended
- At least one letter of recommendation on letterhead (academic or employment related)
- Copy of teaching certificate or licensure if currently a teacher
- Upload supporting materials via the Upload Documents button
Application tips
- Apply as soon as the 2027–28 application opens in early January 2027, since renewals receive top funding priority and funds depend on state appropriations.
- Check that your discipline or planned teaching area matches the current hard-to-fill list or underserved-area list before applying.
- Keep your credit load in mind: the award amount is set by credit hours per semester, so a lighter load means a smaller semester award.
- Read the service agreement carefully — the teaching obligation starts only after you complete the funded degree, and unfulfilled funding must be repaid with 5% interest.
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
