About this scholarship
Doctoral-level fellowship encouraging profitable innovation and creativity in British industry, for exceptional graduates whose research benefits industry, via a company-employed route or a CDT/CASE doctoral route.
Minimum requirements
Good first degree in engineering, science, medicine or design; applicants already holding substantial post-graduate qualifications are unlikely to be accepted. Company route: employed by, or holding an offer of employment from, a sponsoring company. CDT/CASE route: in the first or second year of a UK university doctoral programme strongly coupled to industry. Doctoral-level research in science, engineering or technology inspired by industrial benefit.
Application checklist
- Confirm your route: company-employed (with a sponsoring company) or CDT/CASE (industry-coupled doctoral programme)
- Check your degree and experience fit: good first degree in engineering, science, medicine or design; substantial prior post-graduate qualifications are unlikely to be accepted
- Agree the doctoral research topic with the company and the university so the industrial benefit is explicit
- Prepare the application for submission via the 1851 awards portal before 12 noon GMT on 10 February 2027
- Keep March 2027 free for interviews
Application tips
- If you are on the company route, the 50% salary contribution is capped at GBP 30,000 per annum under the 2027 Terms and Conditions, so agree the balance with your employer in advance.
- The CDT/CASE route has its own terms in the same TCs document; do not assume the company-route funding split applies to it.
- Industrial benefit must be visible in the research proposal itself, not only in the sponsor's letter.
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
