Minimum requirements
Citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan as of 1 April 2027 (JSPS treats Taiwanese and Palestinian researchers in this manner); PhD obtained within six years (on or after 2 April 2021) or expected by the fellowship start date; application submitted by the host researcher through the host institution via the JSPS Electronic Application System; researchers previously awarded and started under the JSPS Standard or Pathway fellowships are not eligible.
Application checklist
- Secure a Japanese host researcher at an eligible institution and agree a concrete research plan
- Confirm your PhD date falls on or after 2 April 2021, or that the PhD is expected by the fellowship start
- Ask the host institution for its internal deadline, which may be more than one month before 23 April 2027
- Prepare Form 2 (CV, achievements, research plan, career plans) and a one-page recommendation from someone other than the host
- Ensure the host institution approves and submits the application in the JSPS Electronic Application System by 5 p.m. JST on 23 April 2027
Application tips
- Your practical deadline is the host institution's internal deadline, not 23 April 2027, so start the conversation with your host in early 2027 at the latest.
- The electronic system only opens about two months before the JSPS deadline, so documents must be ready before it opens.
- Selection runs in two stages (document review by six examiners, then panel review), so the research plan must convince subject specialists, not just the host.
- Do not submit parallel applications through different host researchers for open calls sharing the same JSPS deadline: JSPS accepts only one.
