About this scholarship
OeAD Ernst Mach Grant for short research stays in Austria during academic year 2027/28, for postgraduates and postdoctoral researchers worldwide who finished their studies outside Austria after 30 September 2025. It is a supplementary grant, not funding for a full degree programme.
Minimum requirements
Postgraduates and postdoctoral researchers who finished their studies at a university outside Austria after 30 September 2025. Applicants must not be older than 35 when the research stay starts. Written confirmation of supervision from an Austrian university lecturer is required (supervisor cannot also be a recommender). Short research stay only — NOT a full or partial regular PhD or master's programme.
Application checklist
- Submit the application before 1 December 2026, 23:59 CET
- Provide written confirmation of supervision from an Austrian university lecturer (the supervisor cannot also be a recommender)
- Confirm studies were finished at a university outside Austria after 30 September 2025
- Plan the stay for academic year 2027/28 (earliest September 2027; stays over 6 months in third countries should plan a November/December start due to residence-permit processing)
Application tips
- Secure the Austrian supervisor's written confirmation before applying: it is mandatory, and the supervisor cannot also act as a recommender.
- Plan the start date around permits: stays over 6 months in third countries should plan a November/December start because residence-permit processing takes time.
- Budget own funds alongside the grant: OeAD states the grant may not cover all expenses.
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
