About this scholarship
Scholarships of the Heinrich Böll Foundation for international graduate and doctoral students at state-recognised German universities, with a multi-stage selection process and priority for applicants from EU and DAC countries not yet resident in Germany.
Minimum requirements
International graduate students (master's, first degree obtained abroad, full-time master's at a state-recognised university, master's programmes of at least 4 semesters only; from 1 March 2027 master's applications only for first-cycle programmes) and PhD students (graduate degree obtained abroad). Priority to applicants from EU and DAC countries who have not yet taken up residence in Germany. Applicants must be enrolled at a German university when the scholarship is awarded.
Application checklist
- Check the current requirements and deadlines for the appropriate application round
- Learn the formalities of the application
- Compile the required documents early, including expert reports (references)
- Register for the application portal, starting 6 weeks before the application deadline
- Complete the portal application
- Submit the application before 1 March 2027
- Certificate of enrolment (or admission confirmation) may be submitted later, but no later than the interview in the third selection stage
- Application form must be completed using Adobe Acrobat Reader only
Application tips
- Treat the March deadline as a long runway, not a sprint: the foundation asks applicants to compile documents early, including expert reports, and portal registration opens only 6 weeks before the deadline.
- Plan for a three-stage selection ending in an interview, and keep the enrolment certificate path in mind: it may be submitted later, but never later than the interview stage.
- Note the residence priority: applicants from EU and DAC countries who have not yet taken up residence in Germany are given priority.
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
