About this scholarship
Taiwan Ministry of Education scholarship for outstanding international students to undertake bachelor's, master's or doctorate study in Taiwan. It pays tuition and miscellaneous expenses up to NT$40,000 per semester plus a monthly living allowance, with the application handled by the local Taiwan Representative Office and university admission applied for separately.
Minimum requirements
Foreign nationals (excluding students from the Mainland Area, Hong Kong and Macau) with a secondary school diploma or post-secondary degree, an excellent academic record and good moral character. Maximum scholarship period: 4 years undergraduate, 2 years master's, 4 years doctorate, 5 years total per person. Ineligible: ROC nationals or overseas compatriot students; persons already holding student status in Taiwan (except those graduating to a higher degree); persons who already studied in Taiwan at the same level; exchange or dual/joint degree students under cooperation agreements; persons who already held a Taiwan Scholarship for 5 years; persons whose Taiwan or Huayu scholarship was revoked; persons receiving another Taiwan government or Taiwan education-institution scholarship.
Application checklist
- Apply directly to a university or college in Taiwan for admission within its own deadline
- Submit the Taiwan Scholarship application form to the local Taiwan Representative Office within the period it specifies
- Photocopy of passport or other nationality evidence; highest academic award and transcripts (translated into Chinese or English and authenticated if in another language)
- Photocopy of evidence of the university application (fee remittance, application form, acknowledgement)
- Language certificate: TOCFL Level 3 or above for programmes not completely taught in English (with the exceptions stated in the Directions), or TOEFL or another recognised English test for fully English-taught programmes
- Two reference letters, personally signed and in sealed envelopes
Application tips
- Find the local Taiwan Representative Office's own window early: the Directions state that in principle the period is 1 February to 31 March each year, but each office publishes its own information by 31 January and may set an earlier local deadline.
- Do not apply for a degree at the same level already studied in Taiwan, and do not hold another Taiwan government scholarship at the same time; both disqualify.
- Keep the GPA thresholds in view: bachelor's applicants need an average GPA of at least 3.0 and master's/doctorate applicants at least 3.5 (or the local office's equivalent assessment).
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
