About this scholarship
DAAD's flagship individual scholarship for international graduates pursuing a full master's degree at a state or state-recognised German university, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. It covers a monthly stipend, insurance, a study allowance and travel, for 10–24 months starting October 2027, but does not pay tuition fees.
Minimum requirements
Graduates with a first academic degree recognised in Germany by the time funding begins (usually 1 October 2027). Open to all academic disciplines except dedicated artistic programmes, which use separate schemes. Funding is not possible for a master's programme that has already begun in Germany; only programmes starting in the winter semester of the following year are funded. Duration 10–24 months.
Application checklist
- Register on the DAAD portal and complete the online application
- Upload all documents as scanned PDFs in the portal's Attachments section
- Confirm the deadline for the applicant's country on the DAAD database (country deadlines vary)
- Hold a first degree recognised in Germany by the time funding begins
Application tips
- Do not use one country's deadline for another: country deadlines range from 31 August 2026 to 19 January 2027, with most in October–December 2026.
- Note that the USA/Canada deadline of 30 October 2026 has already passed, while November and December 2026 and January 2027 deadlines for other countries remain.
- Remember tuition is not covered; the stipend works because most German public universities charge no tuition, but confirm the chosen university's fee position first.
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
