Minimum requirements
Doctoral candidates engaged in dissertation research eligible for many fellowships; candidates holding a recognised terminal degree appropriate to the area (e.g. master's in library science, M.F.A.) often eligible; postdoctoral scholars and independent researchers for some fellowships; international scholars welcome (AAS cannot sponsor J-1 visas); preference to individuals who have not held fellowships during the three years preceding the period applied for; each named fellowship has its own topic/eligibility (Peterson, Brown Family Collection, ASECS, Alstott Morgan, American Historical Print Collectors Society, Riznik, Botein, Cushman, Drawn to Art, Hunnewell Hawaiiana, Jaffee Visual and Material Culture, Keller Early American Music and Dance, Karmiole, Lapides Juvenile Literature, Last, Packer, Reese, Schiller, Tracy, and others).
Application checklist
- Single online application form for all one-to-two-month fellowships
- Single PDF containing: CV max 3 pages; proposal max 2 double-spaced pages (project, current status, significance, narrative/argument, literature context, specific sources to be used encouraged); selective bibliography max 1 page; statement of previous support for the project and of current/expected academic appointment and institutional support terms
- If a second month is requested, check the box and state why the additional month is needed (AAS may award a different number of months)
Application tips
- One form covers all 19 fellowships — match your project to the named fellowship topics (e.g. Botein for book history, Keller for early American music/dance, Lapides for juvenile literature).
- Cite specific AAS collection sources in the proposal — appropriateness to the collections is a selection criterion.
- The Christoph Daniel Ebeling Fellowship is NOT administered by AAS — apply through the DGfA instead.
- Campus housing is optional and deducted from the stipend if used ($600–$1,000/month).
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
