About this scholarship
One-month residencies at the Newberry Library for artists and writers whose projects require research in the Newberry collection, with no degree requirement.
Minimum requirements
Any artist or writer whose project requires research in the Newberry collection — fine/performing artists, illustrators, photographers, cartoonists/graphic novelists, authors of fiction/nonfiction, poets, journalists, playwrights, composers, filmmakers; no degree or residency requirements.
Application checklist
- Application via SlideRoom: personal/demographic/professional forms
- CV/resume max 5 pages
- Project title
- Abstract max ~200 words (1,300 characters)
- Project description max 1,000 words (about half project overview, half Newberry research contribution)
- List of materials to consult (max ~300 words)
- 1–2 references (short-answer form via SlideRoom, replies due 10 days after the deadline)
- Up to 3 media uploads (images up to 5 MB, video up to 250 MB, audio up to 30 MB, PDFs/.zip up to 10 MB, or YouTube/Vimeo/SoundCloud links)
Application tips
- No degree is required — the project and its Newberry research need carry the application.
- Split the 1,000-word description evenly between project overview and Newberry contribution.
- Warn referees that their short-answer replies are due 10 days after the deadline.
- Decisions are usually sent in May; sub-fellowships include Jan and Frank Cicero (visual/performing arts), Arthur and Lila Weinberg (independent researchers, preference social justice/reform), and Historical Fiction.
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
