About this scholarship
The Udall Undergraduate Scholarship supports US sophomores and juniors committed to careers in the environment, Tribal public policy, or Native health care, through institutional nomination.
Minimum requirements
Sophomore or junior undergraduate at a US institution with a Udall faculty representative; US citizen, US national or US permanent resident; institutional nomination required; categories: Environment, Tribal public policy, or Native health care; approximately 55-60 scholarships awarded annually (per university pages)
Application checklist
- Institutional nomination via the Udall faculty representative (only the faculty representative can give access to the online application)
- 11-question application form
- 800-word essay on the Udall Foundation's core values
- Transcripts for all college coursework
- Three letters of recommendation (leadership, public service, academic achievement)
- Additional documentation for Tribal public policy and health care applicants and eligible US permanent residents
Application tips
- You cannot self-apply: contact your campus Udall faculty representative first, and meet your campus deadline (often January-February 2027, well before the national deadline)
- Choose the category that fits: Environment, Tribal public policy, or Native health care
- Use the 800-word essay to show leadership, public service and commitment to the category, not just academic record
- Confirm your campus internal deadline early — e.g. 15 December 2026 (UNH), 24 January 2027 (UW-Madison), 5 February 2027 (Case Western)
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
