About this scholarship
IAPETUS offers at least 13 fully funded 3.5-year NERC PhD studentships across UK universities and research organisations, tackling real-world environmental challenges through a central studentship competition.
Minimum requirements
3.5-year PhD project within the NERC remit; minimum 13 fully funded studentships for the 2027/28 cohort; applications through the Iapetus studentship competition (not direct to university); international applicants require supervisor sponsorship and no more than 30% of studentships go to internationals; UKRI funding covers Home fees only (fee difference determined by host organisation)
Application checklist
- Choose one Iapetus project from the project list
- Contact the primary supervisor (international applicants: by Monday 7 December 2026 for sponsorship)
- Online Iapetus application form (available from 6 November 2026)
- 2-page CV (no photo, gender-neutral pronouns) emailed to iapetus.applications@durham.ac.uk
- Academic transcripts in one rolling non-password-protected PDF
- Two referees not connected to the project (references due by Monday 18 January 2027)
Application tips
- International applicants must secure a Unique International Sponsorship Code from the lead supervisor by 7 December 2026 — without it you cannot apply
- Apply to only one Iapetus project per year; a second form automatically withdraws the first
- Keep the CV to 2 pages and do not include a photo
- Do not email the application template — only online forms are accepted, and nothing is accepted after 12 PM GMT on 5 January 2027
