About this scholarship
The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center summer science writing internship gives students 10-12 weeks writing about SERC science for public audiences, on-site or virtually, under a science-writer mentor.
Minimum requirements
Strong scientific background (some natural science coursework; not required to be a science major) and a flair for telling stories about science for a nonscientific audience; mentor Kristen Goodhue (science writer)
Application checklist
- Application via SOLAA (window typically opens by December)
- 1 letter of reference
- 1-3 writing samples explaining science in a public-friendly way (no more than 10 double-spaced pages in total, at least one written piece), placed in the essay/personal statement section after the personal essay
- Choose Science Writing and Communications as one of the top three choices
Application tips
- Lead with what you hope to learn, not just past experience — the programme explicitly rewards learning goals
- Include at least one written sample; multimedia is optional and must be linked with full URLs, not hyperlinks
- Do not submit Q&A pieces as writing samples — they show little about your own writing
- Note the internship can be done on-site or virtually
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
